Presence of mucin positive cells is a peculiar feature of nodular hidroadenomas which has not been mentioned in detail. The aim of this study is to investigate the significance and the ratio of mucin positivity in hidroadenomas. Seventeen cases are reviewed for this purpose; mucicarmen and alcian blue (pH 2,5) stains are used to highlight the mucin positive cells. Mucin was present in 10 (59%) cases. Nine cases showed goblet cells. In two of them these cells were easily recognised by H&E stain; they were forming groups and lining ductal structures. Eight cases displayed mucin positivity at the luminal border, and in 5 of them apocrine type secretion was present. Mucin positivity is not a rare feature of nodular hidroadenomas; it is important for differential diagnosis and should be included in the classical morphologic description.
