Papillary microcarcinoma of the thyroid is a spesific variant of papillary carcinoma. It is common incidental finding autopsy studies and may also be found during surgery for an unrelated thyroid lesion. In this study 912 total and subtotal thyroid resection materials examined in Pathology Department of Medical Schoole of Osmangazi University during 10 year period has been evaluated for frequency of papillary microcarcinoma. Seventy-one (71) out of 912 (7.78%) thyroid resection specimens were reported as malignant tumor. Twenty-eight (28%) of this malignant tumor were papillary microcarcinoma. Sixteen (80%) of the 20 patients were women, and 4 (20%) were men. The mean age of patients with papillary microcarcionoma was 45.4 (27-68). It was found in 1.6% of patients who underwent lobectomy, 2.3% who had subtotal thyroidectomy and 4.9% of those who had total thyroidectomy.
