Uretral caruncles with carcinoma insitu (case report)

The most common benign tumors of the female urethra are urethral caruncles. The great majority occur after menapause. The clinically diagnosed caruncles were found to be carcinoma above 1.6%. In this paper, after total excision of an urethral caruncle which pathologically documented as carcinoma insitu urethra is presented.

Although the etiology is still uncertain, hypoestrogenism and its response to replacement therapy is widely accepted. As proposed by some authors asymptomatic ones must not be left untreated. Since the development of malignancy in urethral caruncle is a reality, to our opinion, all urethral caruncles either symptomatic or asymptomatic, should be treated by total excision.
