Summary

Superficial angiomyxoma (cutaneous myxoma) is a rare, slowly growing painless dermal or subcutaneous lesion that particularly occurs in the head -neck region, the trunk and the genital area. There is a relatively high rate of local reccurence but it doesn't have any metastatic potential. Here we present a case of a superficial angiomyxoma localized to right inguinal region in a 45 year old woman. The tumor was in the subcutaneous tissue, 3x2,5x2 cm in maximum dimension, had two myxomatous nodujes and the cut surface was gelatinous. Microscopically the lesion had a lobular growth pattern with rather poorly defined margins and was composed of spindle or stellate shape cells, numerous small blood vessels and stromal hemorrhage in an extensive myxoid stroma. There was neither cytologic atypia nor pleomorphism. Mixed inflammatory cell infiltration with notable neutrophils particularly in the absence of ulceration or necrosis was present. An epithelial component with epidermoid cyts and entrapped adnexal structures were the striking feature. Immunohistochemically the lesional cells exhibited focal CD34 positivity. Since it's seen rarely, and needs to be ditferientiated from other benign and malignant myxoid tumors, we discussed the histopathologic features and the differential diagnosis of superficial angiomyxoma in the view of the literature.
