Introduction

Dear Colleagues,

The Turkish Journal of Pathology selects an annual “Research Article of the Year” from the research articles published in the Journal that year after evaluation of a jury consisting of the “International Editorial Board”. We will cover the registration, travel and accommodation fees for next year's National Pathology Congress of the selected article's first author. We are expecting your contributions in the form of research articles as regards the award that will be given this year as well.

Referees play one of the most important role when it comes to increasing an article's quality. We know that a highquality referee evaluation increases the quality of the article and therefore the Journal, and that articles receive more citations aft er revision. We will therefore start giving annual “Referee of the Year” awards for the first time this year. As this is the first time, we will present awards to the 3 referees among those that have evaluated the most articles and contributed to the development of the Journal since we have gone on to electronic publishing. The awards will be presented at the National Pathology Congress and these names announced in the January 2014 issue. I would also like to thank ELSEVIER for the support they provided us for these awards.

We have created a referee evaluation system for the future to ensure a more objective evaluation. We therefore score referee reports for timeliness and quality. Our editors evaluate the received referee reports for two parameters. Points are given according to whether the reports were received on time and the quality of the systematic evaluation. The total score will enable us to determine the recipients of the “Referee of the Year” awards. Although we will only be able to give awards to 3 referees, we would like to thank once again all the referees who supported us with their contributions.

I believe the presentations “How to Publish a World-Class Paper in an International Journal?” and “The Assessment of Pathology Research Output Performance, Impact and Collaboration Overview in Turkey.” with ELSEVIER contribution will be very beneficial for everyone at the Annual Pathology Congress this year. The meeting will be informative and show us where we stand in the Scientific World, providing a perspective for the future.

We are changing the reference format of our Journal starting with the January 2014 issue. Developing technology has led to the emergence of new types of references that can be used in articles. We will be making arrangements according to the rules of the “Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals” developed by the “International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE)” starting with our January 2014 issue as it is a commonly used and oft en updated form for medical journals. This will make it possible to use all kinds of references and to cite these references easily and correctly by using relevant soft ware.

We all see the unbelievable and ever-increasing contribution of social media to communication. Many institutions now use web tools such as Facebook and Twitter as part of their daily work. We have created a Facebook page for the Turkish Journal of Pathology to interact more closely with you and become a part of your daily life. We invite you all to follow this page where we will share some information in addition to notifications.

Yours Respectfully,

Alp USUBÜTÜN, M.D.
Chief Editor of the Turkish Journal of Pathology
